RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.
RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."
Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
