Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to contest specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
